"Hands down, one of the most useful tools in my practice today is The EDGE™ Software by GPN. This web-based practice management tool allows you to accurately track your practice metrics both in and away from the office, from your computer or mobile device. When I first started using The EDGE™, I was impressed by the simplicity of use. With a glance at my screen, I could easily monitor what our best selling frame brand was for a given time period, see what our percentage of polarized lens sales where, track our second pair sales, and even compare sales by optician for the month, quarter or year.
Another great use of The EDGE™ is goal setting. I noticed we were starting to slip in our Transition sales last year. We set up a staff meeting and went over the importance of Transitions for our patients, practiced role playing between optician and “patient” on common patient push-backs, and set a goal to increase our Transitions sales by 8% the next month. We were able to track during the next month and see just how we were doing, and easily surpassed that goal. It becomes fun for both staff and doctor to set a plan in action and see results. I challenge you to incorporate this with your staff. Look at your Transitions sales, your percentage of patients with AR on their lenses, or even your sunglass sales. Having data to track will give your staff instant feedback at how they are doing.
What I really like about The EDGE™ is the concept that our practices are really TWO separate business- our optical business and our medical business. Too often we look at our revenue, and don't take the time to separate the two. With The EDGE™, revenue distribution is separated, allowing us to focus on each individually. This information is then further broken down into exams, spectacles, lenses, and contact lenses, and you can compare different time periods both with a graph and numerical data.
